Treasure Island was created artifically with mud drudged up from the bay that surrounds it in 1936. Since its conception has always been in a state of change, development and reinvention, and continues to be viewed as a canvas for developers and the powers that be. The next 10 years will be the most development the island has ever seen, and how this will effect the already present local community remains to be seen. Treasure Island’s community is sparse, but definitely present. Walking around, I met quite a few people who considered themselves to be from there. San Francisco has big plans for the island’s future, going so far as to market it as “San Francisco’s newest neighborhood”. The 10-year “master plan” details an almost complete restructuring of the island.
